FAQ

The Occupational Health Technician training course is conducted over three consecutive days. This comprehensive duration allows for in-depth learning and practical application of the skills and knowledge covered in the programme.

The main objectives of the Occupational Health Technician training course are to equip delegates with the necessary knowledge and skills to perform basic occupational health and safety tasks within their specific area of expertise, taking into account their individual backgrounds and qualifications.

Upon successful completion of the Occupational Health Technician training course, delegates will have the competence to perform a range of occupational health-related activities. This includes conducting basic environmental risk assessments and carrying out routine health screening functions. Delegates will possess the skills required to practice these activities either as independent practitioners or as valuable members of a multidisciplinary occupational health team.

Important Clarification on the Role of Occupational Health Technicians:

Our Occupational Health Technician (OHT) course is designed to provide comprehensive knowledge and skills necessary to conduct a wide range of medical assessments relevant to Technician Roles. However, it’s important to note that employers might have specific medical protocols that go beyond the scope of this course. In such cases, they may arrange additional training courses to cover these extra requirements.

Our course covers the following areas:

  • Audiometry: Frequency testing and ear examinations.
  • Spirometry: Assessing forced vital capacity.
  • Dermatology: Basic skin health checks.
  • General Health Assessments: Including blood pressure, height and weight measurements, urinalysis, and assessments like the K10, Epworth, and Alcohol Audit.
  • Vision Testing: Covering near and distance vision, colour blindness, and peripheral vision.
  • Musculoskeletal Assessments: Including grip strength.
  • Hand-Arm Vibration Assessments: Using Tier 1 & 2 questionnaires.

It is crucial to understand that completing our Occupational Health Technician (OHT) course does not qualify graduates to independently sign off on medical results or provide medical advice. OH Technicians must operate under the supervision of a qualified OH Nurse or Doctor. These supervisors are responsible for interpreting results and advising on them, in compliance with the Society of Occupational Medicine (SOM) Regulations and Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Guidelines.

In line with these regulations, OH Technicians are trained to conduct assessments and collect data, but the interpretation and decision-making based on these results lie with qualified medical professionals. It is important to note that there have been instances of legal action taken by the HSE against individuals who provided advice beyond their scope of competency without qualified supervision.

For more detailed guidance on the role and responsibilities of OH Technicians, as well as the necessary qualifications for supervising these roles, please refer to the HSE guidelines and the Society of Occupational Medicine’s resources:

HSE Guidelines on Occupational Health Professional Competence

SOM’s ‘Careers for OH Technicians’ Guidelines
