Jon Bishop with his ear care set up for ear care training.

Jon Bishop is preparing for a new chapter in healthcare after spending more than 20 years solving telecommunication challenges. In July 2026, when his time with Openreach comes to an end, Jon will launch Clear Ear Cheer, a mobile ear care service created to support care home residents across Essex and Suffolk. This is a big career change, but for Jon, this decision comes from a deeply personal place. His experience with his mum’s hearing loss in residential care helped him see a gap many families will recognise.

When someone in a care home struggle with blocked ears, hearing loss, or earwax build-up, getting the right support is not always simple. GP appointments are limited, and audiology services often face long waiting times. Care home residents may struggle to travel to clinics, and families may feel unsure where to turn. This was not only frustrating for Jon but also a sign that something needed to change.

A career change built around a real need

Jon’s transition into ear care did not begin as a business idea; instead, it began with a family experience. His mum struggled with hearing loss while living in residential care, and like many older people, she needed practical support, time, and access to someone who could help with ear care in a safe and professional way. Blocked ears might seem like a minor problem from the outside, but their impact on daily life is often much greater. In older adults, hearing difficulties can affect conversations, confidence, social connections, and general well-being.

In care homes, this becomes even more important as residents may already face isolation, reduced independence, or health challenges. When hearing becomes harder, everyday moments can become more tiring. A chat with a carer, a family visit, a phone call, or group activity may become difficult to follow. Jon saw this gap first-hand and decided to create a service designed around access, dignity, and care.

Clear Ear Cheer: Mobile Ear Care for Care Homes

Clear Ear Cheer will provide mobile ear care for care homes across Essex and Suffolk.

The service has been created with residents in mind, especially those who may find clinic appointments difficult due to mobility, transport, health, or care needs. By bringing ear care directly into care home settings, Jon aims to make support more accessible for vulnerable people who need safe, professional attention without extra stress for residents, families, or care teams. This community-based approach also reflects a wider need within ear health. As demand for earwax removal and hearing care support continues to grow, many people are looking for trained professionals who understand both practical ear care and the responsibilities that come with working with vulnerable groups. That is where professional ear care training becomes essential.

Jon has completed extensive training with HCPI as part of his preparation for launching Clear Ear Cheer. Professional ear care is not only about learning a procedure; it involves understanding safety, anatomy, infection control, communication, consent, record-keeping, aftercare, and when to refer someone for further medical support. This is especially important when working with older adults or care home residents, where health needs may be more complex.

At HCPI, ear care training is designed for professionals who want to develop safe, confident, and structured practice. Learners gain practical knowledge, clinical awareness and the foundations needed to approach ear care responsibly. For Jon, this training forms part of a wider commitment to building a service centred on quality.

Building Standards Beyond the Minimum

One of the most striking parts of Jon’s journey is his commitment to governance and professional standards. As he prepared to launch Clear Ear Cheer, Jon explored professional regulation for his future practice. He contacted bodies, including the Care Quality Commission and the Academy for Healthcare Science, to seek oversight and accountability. However, independent ear care specialists currently fall outside certain regulatory scopes. For Jon, this did not mean lowering standards; it meant making a clear choice. He has committed to running voluntarily in line with the full CQC Fundamental Standards, even where regulation does not require it for his service model.

As part of this approach, Jon is building Clear Ear Cheer with:

  • Clinical governance frameworks
  • £5 million professional indemnity insurance
  • Enhanced DBS clearance
  • GDPR-compliant systems
  • High standards of infection control
  • Clear processes for safe and responsible practice

This level of preparation shows how seriously Jon is taking his new role in ear care and his approach is built around trust, transparency, and respect for vulnerable people.

Engineering precision to healthcare practice

Jon’s background may be in telecommunications, but many of the skills he has built over 20 years transfer well into healthcare practice. Engineering and telecommunications require careful systems thinking, patience, precision, problem-solving and attention to detail, and these skills matter in healthcare too. A safe ear care service depends on more than one appointment; it needs organised processes, correct records, reliable communication, strong infection control, and a clear understanding of risk.

Jon is now applying the discipline and structure of his earlier career to a new field, where his work will directly support people’s everyday quality of life. This is what makes his career transition so meaningful, and he is not leaving his earlier experience behind; he is using it in a different way.

Why ear care in care homes matters

Ear care in care homes is often overlooked, yet it plays an important role in communication and comfort. When a resident has blocked ears or reduced hearing, it may affect how they respond to staff, family and other residents. They may appear withdrawn, confused, or less engaged when the issue is linked to hearing difficulty. Good ear care does not replace audiology or medical support, but it plays a useful part in helping people access the right pathway at the right time.

With suitable training and safe practice, ear care professionals support early identification, appropriate earwax removal where suitable, and onward referral when needed. For care homes, this type of support may also help staff and families feel more confident when residents struggle with hearing-related issues.
